Kids in Singapore get treated by well-trained doctors as soon as it is possible when they are found to be ill. The medical fees in Singapore are heavily subsided by the Singapore government so it's affordable for anyone to get medical attention. Cleft lips are not often seen in Singapore because they are treated early in a child's life.
In Cambodia, children are not as fortunate. Some children born with an upper cleft lip are abandoned by their parents because they view the child as accursed. They are unaware that an upper cleft lip can be fixed with a simple minor operation.
And the Children's Surgical Centre in Cambodia does that for families who are too poor to afford expensive medical attention.
The latest issue of their newsletter is quite enlightening and inspiring. Do give it a read!
