New school uniforms

Yesterday was the first day of classes at state school in Cambodia. In the past few weeks, staff members have been distributing school supplies to all the students at Riverkids. The morning school began, the students gathered at the family house to get their new school uniforms.

In a basic sense, the uniforms are very important because Cambodian children are not allowed to attend school without them. In a broader sense, when kids attend school wearing clean new clothes, they feel more confident in themselves and more at home in the school environment.

It’s embarrassing for a child to have to attend school in a uniform that’s dirty or old, and kids who feel ashamed and out of place at school are much more likely to just stop going. These new uniforms allow kids to begin school feeling confident and proud of themselves.

After putting on their new clothes, the kids posed for the picture below holding a sign thanking Riverkids donors for providing them with uniforms and school supplies so they can be prepared for school like their peers.

The sign reads: “Thank you, aunts and uncles for our uniforms and school supplies!!!”
