Changiville trains and hires disadvantaged Cambodian youth to work as staff in its guesthouse and restaurant. For the next sixth months, the Get Ready Girls will go to Changiville three days a week. On Mondays and Tuesdays, they will learn English, basic life skills and proper etiquette for dealing with foreign tourists. On Saturday morning, they will take a cooking class in the Changiville kitchen.
The goal of Changiville’s training program is to give the girls the skills and self confidence they need to survive and thrive on their own, while still retaining Cambodian cultural values. The training program also places an emphasis on teaching morality and instilling a sense of right and wrong in the girls. This is important for students from Riverkids, many of whom have grown up with very little guidance or discipline, and are consequently unprepared to handle the regulated environment of a workplace or a school.
Changiville has already produced one success story for a young person from the Riverkids community. Dara, a young man from the slums who used to spend his days hanging around the Riverkids Family House, began as a security guard at Changiville and now works there as a chef. In November, Changiville is sponsoring him to go to Singapore to continue his cooking training. On their first day at Changiville, William told the girls that he will offer them similar opportunities if they commit themselves and work hard. We’re all excited to see how the Get Ready Girls benefit from this partnership in the coming months!
