Volunteers and Medical check ups

For the past three weeks, we had three volunteers from England, Becca, Rachel and Melissa, who helped with teaching English to the Steven House and Blum House students and the Get Ready Girls. Becca works as a nurse in England, and she offered to give basic medical check-ups to the students in addition to teaching.

Keeping the students at Riverkids healthy is a major concern, because even minor ailments can become serious for children who live in the slums and don’t have easy access to medical care. With the help of staff members working as translators, Becca managed to give check ups to almost all the kids in Blum House and the Kindergarten.

Luckily, most of the children Becca screened had only small problems like head lice and infected cuts, and Becca was able to take the necessary treatment measures. The volunteers left to go back home on Friday and by that time Becca had given check ups to well over a hundred kids.
