New Get Ready Girls

On Monday, fifteen new Get Ready Girls started their classes at Riverkids. Before starting the Get Ready program, these girls weren’t attending school. Many spent their days on the streets, collecting garbage or doing other menial and low paying jobs in order to help support their families.

Most of these girls have grown up without much stability or adult guidance. The Get Ready Program is designed to give the girls a structured environment where they can learn self-disciple and self-respect. It will also encourage them make plans for their future and think abut the consequences of their actions.

On the first day of the program, the new Get Ready girls were welcomed by staff members and received a package with school supplies, a toothbrush and a washcloth. Soklee, the volunteer and marketing coordinator, told the girls about her own struggles growing up in an unstable home and encouraged them to work hard, so they too could achieve success and independence as adults.
