On Wednesday several staff members and Singapore director Dale Edmonds, attended a reception given by the European Union Election Mission to Cambodia where Riverkids received a large donation of computer equipment and office supplies.
Now that the Cambodian elections have finished, the EU Election Mission is closing its office in Phnom Penh, and they invited local NGOs to apply for donations of office supplies. RiverKids was selected as one of 17 organizations to receive a donation.
We were expecting to get only a laptop and a few flash drives, so we were surprised and excited to see the huge pile of supplies dedicated to us, including dozens of boxes of paper, a printer, several cell phones, pens and stationary and a wireless internet router.
At the reception, Phy Sophon, Riverkids’ in-country director, went up to accept the donation and thank the EU staff for making it possible. The event was covered by the local press and the next day there was a picture of Mr. Sophon receiving the donation in a major Cambodian newspaper. The accompanying article also mentioned Riverkids and included the following quote from Mr. Sophon: “The EU donations are necessary for local NGOs, who are working to help vulnerable children in Cambodia. They represent a useful means to help them achieve their objectives. The kind donations of the EU encourage local NGOs to cooperate with the Cambodian Government and continue to help at risk children and their families.”
